The McGuire Effect. . . Like Ripples In A Pond!

I feel privileged. How many people get a chance to have a positive effect on so many people and get the opportunity to change peoples lives for the better. To witness the transformation of people who join the programme for the first time, from out of control stutterers to disciplined, controlled confident people is truly amazing. The McGuire Programme really does change the lives of people who stutter and has been doing so for over 20 years. This transformation in people who stutter has a knock-on-effect, as it effects positively on close family members and friends to relatives, work colleagues, school mates and on the persons social life. It’s like a spiders-web-effect, you could think of it as sort of a web of effect. Everything we do has multiple effects that spread out from ourselves like the strands of a spider web, or like ripples in a pond. Your actions affect other people, altering their behaviours in big and small ways that in turn affect others, and so on. It is such a remarkable experience to witness.

I had the pleasure of instructing my 6th McGuire Intensive Course, this time in Düsseldorf, Germany from 15.-18. July 2015. This was a milestone course for the McGuire Programme, as it was our first course in a brand new region for the programme, Germany. We had a great mix of people from far and wide, people came from Russia, Georgia, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Ireland, UK, Pakistan and The Czech Republic. A truly international mix that represents the real nature of our International Programme. We have over 7.000 members worldwide in places such as Canada, USA, Mexico, Latin America, Spain, Ireland, UK, The Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia, Africa, Middle East, India, Australia and New Zealand. Of our 7.000 members, over 300 are active speech coaches, working voluntarily with graduate members of the programme on a daily basis, over Skype, Viber, WhatApp and more importantly face-to-face.

These members and coaches are free to attend any of the courses held worldwide and they come back to courses to work on their own speech as well as helping, guiding and motivating the New Students and existing members.

We had a fantastic three intensive days working on our speech and getting to control our stutters. It was great witnessing the New Students progression from day one to day three, through constant work, learning and drilling-in the new habits. The New Students even surprised themselves when they first started to speak using the new techniques, you could see the positivity light up their faces as they realised the methods been taught really worked. The tension, the stress, the anxiety in the New Students faces and body language had all disappeared. You could see happiness, positively and confidence in their eyes and smiles. A new experience with the sport of speaking.

Accomplishing anything great in life requires significant change that pushes us beyond our comfort zones. And for many people who stutter, our comfort zones can be very small and even saying something as simple as your name or ordering food in a restaurant, can be a major hurdle. Small steps can lead to big results. This programme gives you the techniques, the methods and the confidence to go out there and do the things you’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t or wouldn’t do because of a stutter.
